#REALLIFEWRITER: Nathan Goyer

RealLifeWriter Nathan Goyer

Be sure to scroll below to enter to win an e-copy of Nathan Goyer’s new book Bask!

HeadshotWhat is the title of your new book?

It’s called Bask: City of Shadows.

What was the inspiration behind your book?

A license plate! I saw it when I was driving home from work, a license plate that read “Bask” was on the car in front of me. By the time I had gotten home I had thought up the basic idea on what Bask the book would be about.

What are 3 things you can’t live without?

A Bible to start, then my family, followed by my computer as my handwriting is much too bad to write books with!

What are 3 things you’d have to have when marooned on an island?

A home, a sustainable source of food, and my family! Is that cheating? It kind of feels like cheating.

What book are you currently reading?

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson. I’ll probably be reading it for a while longer, his books are massive!

ZeldaWhat does a typical day of writing look like for you?

Depends on the day. I’ll do small amounts some days, and then get a rush of inspiration and work non-stop all day if I’m free. I wouldn’t always recommend that pattern, I can forget to do basic things like eating those days.

Current 4 favorite things?

My dog Zelda, my Nintendo Switch that my brother got me,  my first hard copy of Bask, and this board game me and my mom play called Dominion!

51Gyj8Z0BsL._SX322_BO1,204,203,200_What would be the impact of one man being used by God in a world where God is unknown? In an attempt to escape a potentially world-ending catastrophe Eric Dunst steps through the world’s first teleporter, his destination Sydney. Instead, he finds himself on a new world entirely. A dark world, corrupted and in constant conflict. A world that revolves around a single energy source that every living thing is enslaved to. Every living thing except Eric. Thrown in the midst of a rebellion, and wondering if there is anything left of his home, Eric prepares himself for a journey that will change everything he understands.

Nathan Goyer
is a new Christian author who is bringing the word of God to life in new ways. Fictional world building and fantastical settings are his way of tackling real issues and thoughts, as is seen his first book series “Bask”. The Bask trilogy is about an alien world that has become dependent on a mysterious form of energy, and those in power have abused the population’s need for the precious resource and use it as a means of control.

Raised by famous author Tricia Goyer, Nathan has spent his life creating stories and practicing his writing. He took creative writing classes through high school, and was even recruited to be an intern at the writing center in University of Arkansas Little Rock.

I’ve been a literary agent assistant (with Mary I’ve been a literary agent assistant (with Mary DeMuth Literary) for a few years now, and I’ve read a lot (a lot) of queries. I’ve picked up a thing or two and wanted to share them here...

- Do your research: before you query an agent, make sure they are representing what you are trying to query. It wastes everyone’s time if you query hoping to change an agent’s mind on a genre (a lot of time it’s not that we don’t want to sell what you’re offering, it’s that we don’t have the contacts to do so.)

- Don’t send via your phone: I mean, I guess you could query from your phone, but you’d better make sure that email is formatted within an inch of its life, and you haven’t left anything out. Take your time and make sure you are hurriedly jumping into something (that leaves a really bad first impression — you don’t want that.)

- Do format your email: Please, for the love of mac and cheese, do NOT send one terribly long run-together paragraph. Give me some white space. My eyes thank you

- No complaining about the standards + guidelines: Don’t complain in your query about the standards and guidelines set up by the agent you are querying. If you have a problem with them, just don’t query that agent.
