2017 ACFW conference mix & mingle

Pre-conference-Mix-Mingle-768x644

I’m loving this pre-conference mix and mingle. The amazing Laurie Tomlinson organized it (once again)! Looking forward to meeting lots of people this year (in the two short days that I’m going to be able to attend. Ha! If you see me walking around—hit me up! We’ll grab some coffee and talk writing!)

Here’s how to play:

Copy/paste the questions and fill out your own answers in a post on your own website. Paste the URL to that specific post (not your homepage) using the handy link-up tool provided at Laurie Tomlinson’s site.

Here’s my answers!

Me

Name: Christen E. Krumm

Location: Small-town, Arkansas

What you write/tagline/trademark: I write Young Adult. I dabble in Middle Grade. I’d love to write adult (eventually)—big goals.

Place in the book world: I’ve finished book one in my YA multimedia dystopian duology—and currently am working on writing book two while I shop book one around to agents.

On a scale of hugger to 10-foot-pole, please rate your personal space: Hugger—love the hugs.

Something VERY serious: How do you take your Starbucks? I love the salted caramel mochas, but my go to is vanilla latte (hot or iced I care not).

The unique talking points that will get you going for hours: Books, writing, words, marketing, plotting (my favorite), Doctor Who, coffee, Star Wars—really if you talk, I’ll talk with you. I’m a talker. I love talking.

Loved ones at home you’ll be missing: My husband and 3 kids (ages 7 (almost 8), 6, and 3).

Conference goals we can pray for? I’m going unofficially. I’m looking forward to hanging out and meeting and visiting with as many people as I can!

Anything we can celebrate with you? That I’d getting the opportunity to come to ACFW—even if unofficially and only for Friday and Saturday!

One or two ways we can help you build your platform? I’d love it if you joined my mailing list! Also, Instagram and Twitter are my favorite. If you’re over there, come say hi!

Don’t forget to head back to Laurie’s site to meet the next author on the list here.

I’ve been a literary agent assistant (with Mary I’ve been a literary agent assistant (with Mary DeMuth Literary) for a few years now, and I’ve read a lot (a lot) of queries. I’ve picked up a thing or two and wanted to share them here...

- Do your research: before you query an agent, make sure they are representing what you are trying to query. It wastes everyone’s time if you query hoping to change an agent’s mind on a genre (a lot of time it’s not that we don’t want to sell what you’re offering, it’s that we don’t have the contacts to do so.)

- Don’t send via your phone: I mean, I guess you could query from your phone, but you’d better make sure that email is formatted within an inch of its life, and you haven’t left anything out. Take your time and make sure you are hurriedly jumping into something (that leaves a really bad first impression — you don’t want that.)

- Do format your email: Please, for the love of mac and cheese, do NOT send one terribly long run-together paragraph. Give me some white space. My eyes thank you

- No complaining about the standards + guidelines: Don’t complain in your query about the standards and guidelines set up by the agent you are querying. If you have a problem with them, just don’t query that agent.

While I don’t have the project completely plotted out, it has me all up in my feels. I can’t wait to introduce you to some of the characters that are coming up. I promise a slow burn romance, feisty and strong female lead (you can already see that in chapter one), forced proximity, all the banter, adventure, and a talking cat (named Sanderson... oh he’s one of my favorites.)
