Work at Home Mom: Day in the Life

Screen Shot 2016-04-19 at 7.19.35 PM

There’s a crazy balance of a work at home mom. I’ve been told more than once, “I don’t know how you do it.” There really isn’t a fancy formula to making it all work. You just do. You figure out what works for you and you do it. But for those still curious what my typical day looks like . . . here you go!

5:01 – 5:20 | My alarm goes off at 5:01 (it just sounded better than 5:00). I stumble out of bed after hitting snooze twice. Trip my way to the kitchen (because there always is a toy (or kid) in the floor) and flip the switch on the coffee maker. I tiptoe to my office, barely breathing less someone wake up, and get my computer going and email refreshing. I pour myself a cup of coffee and settle in.

7:00 – 7:45 | I work until 7 before jumping in the shower. After my shower, I wake E up, make her a snack to take to school, lay her clothes out, wake her up again, fix her hair (top knots are our friend), and get her out the door and up to school.

7:50 – 8:05 | The drive back home, generally (if the boys didn’t wake up and are with me) I listen to a podcast or audiobook. We live half a mile from E’s school and it takes me a good 10-15 minutes to get back down the hill #schooltraffic

8:05 – 8:30 | By this time the boys are up and very much ready to eat. They have a bowl of cereal, I have some oatmeal. We chat about the day. They grab some toys or books and join me in my office. I get back to work, and they have work of their own to do.

8:30 – 9 | I tweet my west coast writer buddies and challenge to a 15 – 30 minutes writing sprint. Gooooood morning! (they probably hate me).

10 – 10:30 | Andy wakes up and plays with the boys. Ahhh quiet (mostly).

11:30ish | By now the boys are starving and ready for lunch—and I’m more than ready for a break.

12:15 | Kiss Andy on his way out the door, make sure the boys aren’t getting into too much trouble, start a load of laundry, and work on tying up any work projects for the day.

Screen Shot 2016-04-19 at 7.24.19 PM

1:45 | Gym time. The goal is 40-45 minutes on the elliptical. I bring an ebook so it isn’t so bad. The boys love playing in the playroom, I love the reading time.

2:40 | Time to pick up E and the car pool kids from school.

3:15 | Snack time. After snack time, the kids are whisked out the back door to play. I finish up laundry, pick up the living room, clean the kitchen, make sure there isn’t anything pressing with work that’s popped up, and start supper.

Screen Shot 2016-04-19 at 7.25.46 PM

5:15 | Dinner. When Andy’s working, we all turn into 80 year olds and eat early.

6 – 7:30 | Kids take baths, clean up any messes they have made, we play games, etc. etc. I clean up supper dishes, help Oliver with his bath, help brush teeth, and prep the diffusers for the night (Peace and Calming or Cedarwood).

7:30 – 7:45 | Oliver is the first one out. I generally have to rock/bounce/sing for 15 minutes and he’s out. Elsie and Drew will play quietly with each other until I have Oliver asleep

8 – 8:30 | Story time/homework time. Drew and I are reading through a Richard Scarey storybook while Elsie and I are working our way through the Chronicles of Narnia (Drew’s been sneaking into Elsie’s room to listen to Narnia as well—I don’t blame him).

8:30 – 9:30 | This is my peak writing time—or currently editing time. I make myself a cup of hot chocolate (+ a drop of lavender essential oil, YUM) and work for an hour.

Screen Shot 2016-04-19 at 7.20.16 PM

9:30 – 11 | Bedtime for mom. I prep my diffuser, pjs on, oils on, teeth brushed. I read for about 15 minutes before I can’t hold my eyes open.

And that, is a typical day in this work at home mom’s life. It gets changed up a little when Andy’s off work (because, hello, partner in crime!) But that’s pretty much it. I recently adapted my schedule and routine because summer is coming and it had me all like:

giphy

But with the right routine down, I’m like like:

We’ve got some fun activities planned this summer, and I’m really looking forward to doing all the things.

What about you? What is your typical day look like? I’d love to see!

May is such a busy month! But we don’t want to let our writing suffer. This is not a word count goal or a “time spent” goal this is just a challenge to fit writing in little pockets of time — 3 minutes while you’re waiting for water to boil, 10 minutes while you’re in the last of the school pick up lines, 5 minutes while you’re waiting to check out at the store.

These little pockets of time, stolen to write, will help the words stack up. I hope you’ll join us this month!

What: the Margins Writing Challenge
