Why the Change to It Happened at Christmas?

It Happened at Christmas got a little bit of a facelift! I’m really excited about these changes, but I have been asked about why I made changes, and what exactly changed.

Why did you change it?

When I first wrote It Happened at Christmas, I was a baby author. Since then, I’ve learned a lot—about writing, about the industry—and I wanted the book to reflect that. No, this does not mean with every new thing I learn or shift in the industry I’ll be tweaking the book. I also wrote it as a nod to my favorite 90s rom-com, and I wanted to change it just a little so it would stand more on its own two feet (not to mention the age demographic I wrote it for doesn’t know what I’m talking about when I mention said 90s rom-com.)

Another big reason I made some tweaks and changes is when I first published it in 2019, I published it as a standalone. I’ve had many requests to turn it into a series, and I was always dead set against that (why? I don’t know. I just was.) Since it’s sat with me for a while I began to think … why couldn’t I turn it into a series. So some of the changes I made in the book open it up for more stories with other characters in the story (I can’t wait to tell you more!)

What did you change?

The overall story is still the same. Some relationships have changed, places have changed, and I changed Fiona the cat to Fiona the raccoon. Because let’s be honest. Raccoons make for a better story (when in doubt, add a raccoon I always say… okay I never say that, but it sounds like a good idea.) When it all was said in done, I only added a couple thousand words, but I hope the story shines a little brighter.

I also added some extra goodies in the back — including a link to download the fun book club kit and character cards!

And yes, there are more books coming. I’m hoping to be able to make an announcement in a couple of months with more information on the title, what the book is about, and who! This story has been with me for a minute, and I can’t wait to be able to share it with you!

Want to get a copy of the new It Happened at Christmas? You can purchase a copy from Amazon, or call the wonderful staff at Bookish, and they can get you the hook up!

If you’ve already gotten a copy of It Happened at Christmas, I would so love it if you left a review! They help so much in helping a book find new readers.

That was twelve years ago... and I almost listened That was twelve years ago... and I almost listened.

I’m really glad I didn’t. To be honest, this person wasn’t wrong. At the time I wasn’t very good at writing. It was early on in my career. Hearing that I should give up was a punch to my gut and I had two choices.

I could listen, and not write ever again.

OR

I could buckle down and get better.

I chose to get better. I still don’t think I’ve “arrived” but I am a lot better than I was then.

So this is me telling you — don’t ever stop dreaming, don’t ever stop learning, and don’t take bad advice.

You got this. I’m cheering for you.
