What is the title of your new book?
The Pretender: A Blackguard in Disguise
What was the inspiration behind your book?
I was going through an extremely difficult time in my personal life. Things were very hard emotionally and I needed some sort of a respite. I had written a lot when I was younger, but one day during my trials I sat down at this old computer that my neighbor had given me and started to write. I wanted my story to be realistic (reality = trials) but I also wanted God’s promises to prevail. I wrote the first 4 books (drafts) which was about 900 pages in less than a month.
Are any of your characters based on real life people?
Yes!
What are 3 things you can’t live without?
My husband; my kids (including my grandson); and my old NIV translation.
What are 3 things you’d have to have when marooned on an island?
My husband (he’s a gifted outdoorsman—we’d probably survive); my old NIV translation; and my espresso machine (even though I’ve had to go completely decaf, I’m still hooked on it.)
Who is your all-time favorite character from a book?
David Zinc from John Grisham’s The Litigators. Great book!
What is currently on your nightstand?
The Moonlighters Collection (which is a Terry Blackstock trilogy).
What book are you currently reading?
Truth Stained Lies (Terry Blackstock trilogy listed above).
What are you currently watching on Netflix?
Old Dick Van Dyke/Mary Tyler Moore reruns. Just for fun!
Favorite Starbucks drink?
Flat white.
What does a typical day of writing look like for you?
The first half of my day involves a lot of marketing, telephone calls, and emails. After lunch I sit down with my Bible for a while. Then the second half of my day involves as much writing as I can squeeze in. Sometimes I will write in the evenings as well, but I get pretty tired around 8:00 p.m., so I put it down around that time for sure. Wednesdays I usually don’t write at all because I’m an AWANA Cubbies Director and the prep for that takes me all day.
Favorite quote?
“I am blessed with work.” The character of “Grandpa” (played by Carroll O’Connor) says it in the movie, Return To Me, which is probably one of my very favorite movies.
Current 4 favorite things
1. My grandson’s Thursday night phone call—to update us on how 1st grade is going. It’s going well so far.
2. Flat white at Starbucks
3. Lemon Garlic Chicken at Crave
4. The Detroit Tigers—and they will always be my favorites, even when they lose!
