#RealLifeWriter: Jennifer Deibel

Jennifer Deibel

Congratulations to Meg Chan who won a fun swag pack from Tabitha Caplinger!

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently pitching my historical romance manuscript to agents. This is the book of my heart, and it has been a long time coming. I’m also working on some freelance articles, as well as just starting the dreaming phase for my second book.

What was the inspiration behind your book?

It was really born from our experiences living in Ireland for nearly 7 years. Fitting into a small, rural village in the far west of Ireland proved to me an eye-opening experience, and a spiritual pilgrimage of sorts. I first began writing this book shortly after we returned as a way to process and share what it was like for us.

Which character was your favorite to write, and why?

I love all my characters, and they each had their elements that made them fun, or moving, or annoying to write. I think my favorite would have to be the older gentleman who looks after my main character, and is the mentor to the story’s hero.

What are 3 things you can’t live without?

1. My family
2. Chapstick
3. Coffee

What are 3 things you’d have to have when marooned on an island?

* A set of my favorite Liz Curtis Higgs Scottish Trilogy books (since it’s a set, it totally counts as one!)
* My husband!
* Coffee!! (I’m sensing a theme here)

Who is your all-time favorite character from a book?

Oh man, that’s a toughie!! I think Jaime from the aforementioned Scottish trilogy by Liz Curtis Higgs.

What is currently on your nightstand?

Far too many things!! A water bottle (there may be one or two empty ones as well….), a lamp, my spare set of glasses, my journal, a handmade ring-holder made by a dear friend, the CD-version of She Reads Truth, a copy of She’s Still Yours by Jonathan and Wynter Pitts, and Walk It Out by Tricia Goyer.

What book are you currently reading?

Oh boy! I’m currently working through several. She’s Still Yours by Jonathan and Wynter Pitts, Walk it Out by Tricia Goyer, Teach Like a Pirate by Dave Burgess. And I just finished Through Waters Deep by Sarah Sundin.

What are you currently watching on Netflix?

The Blacklist and the Great British Baking Show

Favorite Starbucks drink?

Peppermint Mocha!!

What does a typical day of writing look like?

Well, there’s nothing typical about my writing schedule. I teach middle school full time, plus freelance, plus take care of my three kiddos, so right now a lot of my writing happens in the fringe hours. For instance, I stole a few minutes to do this Q&A while the tiny humans were doing their pre-bedtime reading. When I’m working on one of my books, I prefer solid chunks of uninterrupted time. There’s always coffee, and some good instrumental Irish music is never too far behind.

What are your current 4 favorite things?

My (in)courage planner from Dayspring. It’s a total lifesaver right now, and it’s serving double duty as calendar/planner and lesson plan book! (that’s my affiliate link)
My super-insulated MyBevi tumbler! It keeps my coffee hot for hours…which is a very good thing for my middle schoolers. J
The She Reads Truth App
My bed. 😀

I’ve been a literary agent assistant (with Mary I’ve been a literary agent assistant (with Mary DeMuth Literary) for a few years now, and I’ve read a lot (a lot) of queries. I’ve picked up a thing or two and wanted to share them here...

- Do your research: before you query an agent, make sure they are representing what you are trying to query. It wastes everyone’s time if you query hoping to change an agent’s mind on a genre (a lot of time it’s not that we don’t want to sell what you’re offering, it’s that we don’t have the contacts to do so.)

- Don’t send via your phone: I mean, I guess you could query from your phone, but you’d better make sure that email is formatted within an inch of its life, and you haven’t left anything out. Take your time and make sure you are hurriedly jumping into something (that leaves a really bad first impression — you don’t want that.)

- Do format your email: Please, for the love of mac and cheese, do NOT send one terribly long run-together paragraph. Give me some white space. My eyes thank you

- No complaining about the standards + guidelines: Don’t complain in your query about the standards and guidelines set up by the agent you are querying. If you have a problem with them, just don’t query that agent.
