#RealLifeWriter: April Lynn Newell

April Lynn Newell

Enter below for your chance to win an e-copy or audiobook of April Lynn Newell’s The Reconciling! Congratulations to, Beth Wolfe, who was last week’s winner!! Please e-mail me with your mailing address!

What is the title of your book?
The Reconciling, book 2 The Remnant debuts by the new year!

What was the inspiration behind your book?
First, I really wanted a YA fantasy series that was clean and not overwhelming with romance. I was longing for a good adventure I could grow from too! Second, for the actual plot, it all began with King Midas and the golden touch, his daughter and it grew from there.

Which character was your favorite to write, and why?
Kesil by far because he’s so so real to me. He toes the line between hero and villain as he deals with the same questions and struggles I think we all do.

What are 3 things you can’t live without?
Chocolate
Chocolate
Scripture
🙄

What are 3 things you’d have to have when marooned on an island?
A pillow for sure, cause I can’t sleep well without one and if I can not sleep well then I’m not going to survive!
The Bible for that Joy I know I know I would need.
And duct tape. Cause you can build anything with duct tape right?

Who is your all-time favorite character from a book?
Oh man…that is a tough one…I don’t know about all time but Hermione was a pretty significant role model to me growing up. She didn’t waver from who she was even though it wasn’t always popular. She followed her calling, if you will, even when It was hard and heartbreaking — which it can be!

What is currently on your nightstand?
Haha my tablet (to write), a magazine, Kleenex and a lamp my great-grandmother painted.

What book are you currently reading?
I’m working on Laugh it Up by Candace Payne

What are you currently watching on Netflix?
I’m between Netflix shows! Open to suggestions!

Favorite Starbucks drink?
Chai tea latte, and in the fall add me some pumpkin spice!

What does a typical day of writing look like for you?
These days I never get a whole day. Usually I’m chasing my 18 month old and 3 year old around all day. Once they’re in bed I get an hour or so when I can write and catchup on other things.

I love to find time to go to a local coffee shop and write. In which I must have a latte and ear buds to listen to a new Spotify playlist.

Favorite quote?
“Live a life of contrast” a youth leader I had in high school taught us this all the time. It stuck and remains a goal in everything I do and create.

Current 4 favorite things
Snapchat
Tarte Mascara
Lularoe leggings
Verydice app for free stuff!

I have been writing ever since I can remember. However, it was my fourth grade teacher who gave me the encouragement I needed to believe in myself as a writer. From that point on, I was a writer.

Journalism, poetry, fiction. I love it all and have done it all. I am excited to begin my career as a novelist with The Reconciling: Part I of the Overcome Trilogy followed with The Remnant: Part II of the Overcome Trilogy in January 2018!

I am a proud resident of Texas and live in the burbs with my husband, John, and daughters, Emalyn and Olivia. I can’t get enough of pizza and hummus (though not necessarily together) … (though why not now that I think about it). I like nature walks, reading and binge watching TV shows. I owe all to my Jesus and love serving Him through my passions and talents.

More about The Reconciling:

Chrissi Camden finds herself on a mysterious and spontaneous journey to the ancient King Roi (raw-ee) who may be able to lift her life-long and deadly curse. Unfortunately, the king calls her on this journey with not just her best friend, the intelligent Phil, but her archenemy and the rebel of their school. Together, the four make their way on a journey they never anticipated in a land much, much different than home, where a supernatural war takes place before their very eyes. As they fight strange and terrifying creatures, pass through eerie places and over treacherous terrain will this unique crew find their way home? And even greater, will they find the legendary king, who hasn’t been seen or heard from for many generations?

The Margins Writing Challenge May is such a busy The Margins Writing Challenge

May is such a busy month! But we don’t want to let our writing suffer. This is not a word count goal or a “time spent” goal this is just a challenge to fit writing in little pockets of time — 3 minutes while you’re waiting for water to boil, 10 minutes while you’re in the last of the school pick up lines, 5 minutes while you’re waiting to check out at the store.

These little pockets of time, stolen to write, will help the words stack up. I hope you’ll join us this month!

What: the Margins Writing Challenge
When: May 1 - 31
Rule: write in the margins of your day and watch the words add up!
RSVP: kidding there’s no RSVP — but we’d love to know if you’re joining so we can cheer you on! Let us know in the comments below!
