Not surprisingly, the kids and I watched Finding Nemo (again) this weekend. As much as I’ve been thinking about writing lately there were a couple of things that just stuck out to me in relation to writing.
Number one is the obvious. “Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming.” Remove the word “swimming” and insert “writing” and you have a new mantra. No matter what life throws your way you have to, “Just keep writing.”
The second one comes a little later in the show. Dory is ready to plunge head first into whatever may be (this being a whale’s belly. Why? Because the whale told her to). While Marlin is just a little more leery.
“. . .It’s time to let go. Everything’s going to be alright.”
“How do you know? How do you know something bad isn’t going to happen?”
“I don’t!”
What are you holding on to that is holding you back? Is it fear of getting rejected? Even JK Rowlings was rejected a couple times. Is it insecurity that you aren’t good enough? Maybe you aren’t, but maybe you are — you will never know if you don’t try. So let go. Let go and see what happens. Maybe, as in the case in Finding Nemo, you’ll be tossed in the right direction. You’ll never know until you let go.

Great post, C! Fear of rejection definitely weighs strongly with me. All the what ifs can really be a downer, but you’re right–we just have to keep writing. It’s what we do. It’s in our nature. Keep on writing and we’ll “find” what we’re looking for soon enough.
