Hazy memories slammed into Mira’s brain jolting her awake.
She tried to even her breathing as she took in her surroundings.
Clinical. White walls. Monitors.
There weren’t any white walls in her house. Her mother deemed white walls were boring, and they’d spent the entire summer painting bright murals all over the house.
This definitely wasn’t her bed. A crinkly paper-thin blanket. A stiff board under her sore body. Her bed was like falling into a cloud.
Tentatively, she unwrapped herself from the bed covering and put a foot on the icy floor. She was alone in a hospital room.
Mira struggled to inhale. She felt like she was breathing around a brick in her throat. Squeezing her eyes shut she tried to conjure the last memory before ending up here. She’d gone jogging with Johnny. Right?
A fog settled over her. She tried to shake it. Yes, she was sure they had gone jogging on the old fort trail behind school, and the last thing she remembered was pain lancing through her head, but if she was here, alone … what had happened to Johnny?
