I’ve been really trying hard to be active more during the week. The days when I’m up early working, and then crashing in the afternoon—instead of crashing, I’ve been trying to get up and move. Sitting is said to be the new smoking. I’m doing everything in my power to stay healthy (and not . . .smoke?) Here are a couple of things (and a good idea) that I’ve been doing the past couple of week.
Get a FitBit: I love my FitBit, and at the same time I hate it because it reminds me just how un-active and glued to my office chair I really am. FitBits are a great tool to help you stay active as you can set reminders to remind you to get up and move; you can set goals; and you can also challenge friends. I’ve been working really hard to make sure I get up and move, and my FitBit is helping me to track my progress.
Take breaks—often: I’ll admit. I am the worst about sitting down in my chair, looking up at the clock and realizing that I have been sitting there for three hours without getting up. Set an alarm on your computer (or FitBit) to remind you to get up at least hourly and move. Random dance parties are my favorite. A plus, it gets your blood moving again which can help you think better and work faster.
Sit on an exercise ball: If you’re like me (a klutz) you’d also be good to get a stabilizer, however, exercise balls can help with movement, posture, and stability. It’s a win-win-win situation. (I don’t currently have an exercise ball, but it’s high on my wish list!)
Join a gym: This is one of the biggest things I’ve done for my health this year. Just knowing that I’m paying X dollars a month guilts me into making sure I get it into my daily routine. Also, it gets me out of the house so I’m not a complete hermit.
