For the past few years, I’ve created a backward NaNoWriMo word count tracker. I’m a fan of the backward method because it’s heavy on the front end when you have the most momentum and easier toward the end of the month for days like Thanksgiving (for those in the US). November is also a huge month for us because it’s my wedding anniversary and then multiple family birthdays. This year I’ve also created two other kinds of word count trackers.
One is a daily tracker. You can mark off the days that you get writing done — which is helpful for NaNoWriMo rebels like me who don’t generally write on the weekends. This one is helpful to see that you are making progress, even if it’s slow.
Finally, there is a blank tracker. In order to “win” NaNoWriMo, all you need are 30 writing sessions where you write at least 1,667 words each. Maybe you have two or three of these sessions a day. Maybe it’s only one a day a week. Regardless, 30 sessions by the end of the month will get you to the finish line.
These word count trackers are offered as a free download to anyone who signs up for my newsletter. I send out about one newsletter a month — sometimes two. It’s filled with fun recommendations and updates on all things author-related.
