Writing Rituals

20130429-172906.jpgWriting Rituals. I have heard so so many authors recommend you have writing rituals—to get you to “that place” when you’re ready to start writing. While I understand their points, and while it may work for them, I heartily disagree (besides the fact they don’t really work at all for me).

For one, I don’t think they work because I am completely ADD (self-proclaimed) I constantly have to change it up (just recently I moved my desk/”office” from the kitchen to a corner in the living room). Also, I’m a busy mother of two crazy, lovable littles. I don’t have time for rituals. My rituals will quickly become theirs—lucky pen? They will steal it and hide it never to be found again. Special hat? It’s now their special dress-up hat. Fuzzy socks? I’ll lose them (the wash would eat them). Have to type? My computer will break. I just don’t have time for rituals. Most days if I want to write, I have little snippets of time that I can jot a scene down on a napkin while the kids are eating lunch. Or, what’s been working the best recently, scribbling out a scene on the notepad I’ve taken to carry around while I stand in line at the postoffice or at the bank. I can’t have a certain pen or place because more then likely it would change from day to day.

As my favorite author, Lauren Oliver, said:

“I try to train myself out of writing rivals because I find that if you can only write when you have this pen or at home at this computer, it gives you all these excuses to indulge in not writing . . .”

My point precisely.

What about you? Do you have any writing rituals? Do you agree with them?

Bring Your Money Into the Light | Christy Fitzwater

I have had the joy of working with Christy through Litfuse Publicity Group. She’s awesome and a joy to work with. I absolutely love what she says in the following article and in her ebook Going Cash—which you can download for FREE using the link below. I promise you, you won’t regret it!

image001For the first two decades of our married life, I handled all the finances and did it poorly. Of course, I didn’t know I was doing it poorly, but now I do.

I thought it was great that I was taking care of the money, so my husband didn’t have to worry about it. It seemed like a good wifely thing to do, taking that burden off his already heavy plate. But now I see that what happened was me and the money went into a dark room, and bad things happen in the dark.

Matt’s really frugal, and he didn’t need money for stuff most of the time. But then every once in a while he would say, Hey, can we buy… I would go ballistic. Are you crazy? Do you know what our finances look like? No we don’t have money for that!

Of course he didn’t know what our finances looked like.

The money was in the dark.

A few years ago my monthly spending got really bad. We were starting to spend money we didn’t have, encroaching into the next month’s paycheck—a dangerous place to be. I realized one day that I was swiping the debit card without evening looking at the amount I was spending. I would leave the grocery store having no clue what I had just done to our monthly budget.

Until the bank statement came, and I would be appalled at what I had spent. But that’s what happens when the money is in the dark.

So in frustration three years ago, I decided to follow my friend’s lead and go to using all cash.

button-going-cashBest decision EVER.

You know what happened? I went to the bank and saw the money in the envelope. I put money for Matt in separate envelopes for his spending—right out there where he could see how much he had. I placed real money in see-through plastic sleeves in a purse-sized money organizer. Now even the kids can see how much clothing and allowance money they have.

Jesus says, “Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” (John 3:21 NIV)

I used to be horrified to talk to Matt about the state of our finances. It didn’t seem nearly so bad when it was just me and the money in the dark, but when I pulled out the truth for him to see I would realize how bad it was. Now that we have gone to using all cash, I have no shame. We all can see how much money there is. Our spending is well under control. (Thank God!) It has brought a peace into our marriage that I didn’t know was missing until I experienced it.

So let me ask you—is your money in the dark where things go bad, or have you brought your finances into the light?

Making Time To Write

20130414-175912.jpgSo I’m reading this book (I know. . . big surprise right?) Pen on Fire: A Busy Woman’s Guide to Igniting the Writer Within. So far I’m liking it, like a ton. There are lots of different writing exercises at the end of each short chapter, and for once I’m actually doing the exercises (most of them anyways).

One of the exercises encourages you to find little pockets of time to write, so I started making a list of the little pockets of time I could steal to write (a little soon adds up to a lot!)

*Kids’ bath time - since this is normally the time I straighten up the living room (no worries the bathroom door is almost straight across from the living room so I can keep an eye on them at all times) I plan on having the kids help me clean-up before they jump in the bath. That way I can take my notebook in the bathroom and write while they play in the tub.

*While the kids play out side – generally I just take whatever book I’m reading or play/work on my phone, but this is a perfect time to scribble out some words!

*While driving – if I’m riding (Andy driving) I can free write some words, if I’m driving, I can use my phone and Suri—I need to use her more.

*Waiting in line at Target and Aldi’s – really these are the only places I generally shop. And let me tell you. . . that Aldi’s weekend line is a doozy. It’s also a good idea to pick the longest line—I can use all the help I can get!

20130414-175940.jpg*Eating lunch – since moving my “office” from the kitchen to the living room I don’t actually eat at my desk/while I work anymore (bad habit of mine). Now I have an extra seven minutes to write out some words while the kids chow down on their PB&Js.

*Making dinner – a little here, a little there.

*While watching T.V. – I don’t really watch a lot of t.v., but sometimes Andy and I will get into a show on Netflix (currently it’s Fringe season one. There are four seasons, and we’re LOVING it. . .it’s so strange!) Anyways. I can’t always concentrate very well while watching t.v. and trying to write, but I hate sitting still not doing anything, so even if I only get a paragraph written, it’s a paragraph written.

*If D or E wakes me up early – lately D has been waking up early (thank you canine teeth . . .), but this weekend it was E (our first accident bedwetting. . .she’s been going strong for four weeks, so. . .) I was woken up. Since it wasn’t a simple “Here-is-a-mimi-go-back-to-sleep” type waking up, I was awake, awake. Perfect time to get up and get some writing done. Quiet house. And since it was 4 AM it’s a good 3-4 hours of peace and quite to write—or write until I get re-tired and curl up on the couch and sleep for a couple before the kiddos wake us.

*After I put the kids to bed – this is what I have been doing. It hasn’t been working out so great lately because I have been completely zonked or so behind in work so I either crash or get caught up on work—hence the fact I haven’t been getting any writing done whatsoever.

So that’s the plan. I’d still like to get 1,000-ish words in a day, but some days I can’t hold myself to that. Somedays I have to realized that I also have a household to run, a husband to love, kids’ noses to wipe. But on those days. On the days I’m completely over-whelmed with life, I will just stick to getting something down on paper. A sentence. A paragraph—anything is better than nothing and a little will soon add up to a lot.

When do you steal little bits of time to write? I’d love to know—always looking for more ideas!

More ideas on my post Finding Time to Write :)

what i’m reading this week

I have a bad habit of reading numerous books at the same time. I didn’t always have this problem, but then I started college and, being an English major reading numerous books for different classes at the same time, I learned to read numerous books at one time. So without further ado. . .here’s the numerous books I’m reading this week.

Bleak House | Charles Dickens I am loving this book. I actually started reading this one last summer with my “kids”. Summer turned into Fall and we had only read 10-ish chapters. After bumping into one of my “kids” last week, we decided to jump in and finish it this summer before she goes off to college (COLLEGE! Elissa, don’t go . . . yes, do. You’ll have a blast. Go my little padawan. Fly). There are already lots of notes I’m scribbling, and I’m having so much fun. And because we’re the biggest nerds alive, we’re meeting once a month to discuss what we’ve read. It’s the Big Book Book Club.

Fever 1793 | Laurie Halse Anderson I’m reading this one with the kid that I’m tutoring. I have lots of fun planned for this one.

7 | Jen Hatmaker I am loving this book. I interlibrary loaned it and it’s already due without me having finished it. Seriously an amazing book. Non-Fiction sometimes is boring and stuffy—not Jen’s book. Jen writes the book as if you are sitting at her kitchen table, drinking coffee while she tells the tale of her experimental mutiny against excess.

For the Love of Books

20130407-223208.jpgI’m blaming my love of books on my parents. No really. It’s all their fault.

I remember the first book my dad brought me home I was about three or four years old. I’m pretty sure he got it while on a business trip—The Velveteen Rabbit.

It was a hardback copy with a hunter green cover and beautifully illustrated jacket. There were lots of words. Dad would read me one page a night. I looked forward to that one page a night. I’d get my pajamas on, brush my teeth, and rush to bed—waiting for dad to say goodnight to my brothers before coming in and reading me that one page.

There are tons of pictures of me “reading” to my brothers as a young girl (like before I actually could read . . .and I started reading a four, so you can imagine how young we all were). Mom later told me I forced my brothers to sit there and listen to me. Apparently I was quite the bossy little lady.

Fast forward a bit. I was mom’s grocery shopping buddy. Me and her would always shop together—maybe it was the fact that we would go after my gymnastics classes and the rest of my siblings were at home with dad. Maybe I was just special to get this mom-and-me time–whatever the reason, I loved this mom time. Another thing I remember about these shopping trips, was the books mom always bought me. It started with Little House in the Big Woods. Each week I would get the next book, and when finished, mom would get me the next one. Being a pastor’s kid, I know we didn’t have a lot of extra money–especially money to spend on books, but I so looked forward to these books each week and I’m so thankful to my mom who saw the need to splurge. I also remember the candy bar that we would always, always get to split every time we’d go shopping. Instilling in me a love for chocolate as well—thanks, mom.

coffeebooks.jpgSpeaking of libraries, this place is one that I adore. If we ever move to a new town, and in my married life we’ve lived in three different towns, getting a library card is right up there with getting the water and electric turned on. We spent hours in the library growing up. Many times, we would go to the library to do school—these were my favorite days.

And now. Now I have incurable love for books. I have a small library (given it’s still in boxes in my attic, but a small library nonetheless) now and I love diving into a new book. Love the words on the page. The story.

What about you? Who’s fault is it that you love books?

Fun Stuff

This would work especially well for all those work-at-home moms out there. Then again, it wouldn’t work so well if all the ones you’re at home working around can’t read the note and just want to color it or put a note on their backs like momma.
